Prescription drugs killed 300% more people than illegal drugs

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

From Naturalnews.com– the Florida Medical Examiners Commission posted the numbers from 2007.

In 2007, cocaine was responsible for 843 deaths, heroin for 121, methamphetamines for 25 and marijuana for zero, for a total of 989 deaths. In contrast, 2,328 people were killed by opioid painkillers, including Vicodin and Oxycontin, and 743 were killed by drugs containing benzodiazepine, including the depressants Valium and Xanax.

Alcohol directly caused 466 deaths, but was found in the bodies of 4,179 cadavers in all.

So it seems that the new epidemic is having corporate pharmaceutical companies push drugs “legally” as opposed to the individual pushing drugs “illicitly”? This is also evidently a problem in rural america as well.

Lego concentration camp set

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

From the WTF files. This is an old story but its the first time I’ve seen it. A series of 7 LEGO kits were designed by Polish artist Zbigniew Libera in the late 1990s.

From the Harper’s article:

Each box contains the blocks necessary to build the figures and structures on its lid. When Libera requested the LEGOs from the company’s Warsaw representative, he planned to create sets for a prison and a hospital, but the project evolved into a concentration camp. According to a press release issued by the LEGO Group, “If the had described his ultimate project to us in advance, he naturally would not have received a single LEGO element from us!”.

I don’t believe these sets ever hit the retail shelves (although it is rumored that these sets were fetching over $7,000 in private auctions). Some of the box shots are really creepy.

‘Real’ coverage of the RNC

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Tired of the same old wearisome unimportant “news”? Wondering about the peculiar lack of coverage of the Republican National Convention? Well fear no more. Get “real news” from the Coldsnap twitter feed. Its real time commentary of the Coldsnap legal team on the ground in St. Paul. There are some interesting tidbits being posted on the twitter feed such as:

Person tackled by 5 SPPD in riot gear for refusing a search. Media was present for this. 02:08 PM September 01, 2008 from web

Female individual snatched off street by unmarked car on 6th & Wacouta 02:12 PM September 01, 2008 from web

Rage Against the Machine just took 200 people on unpermitted march toward river. They are chanting, “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.” about 6 hours ago from web

Report from prisoner: had been pepper sprayed all over her body, was not allowed to wash it off, now has first degree burns. about 5 hours ago from web

If the Twitter feeds are indeed accurate, theres some nazi germany tactics going on in St. Paul. This is MOST certainly stuff you won’t hear coming from the spoon fed corporate media outlets.

RATM playing across from the RNC… what could go wrong?

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

The rebel rock group Rage against the Machine are playing on September 3rd (the same time as the Republican National Convention) in St. Paul, Minnesota at the Target Center. If their last co-liner with a political convention is any sign of things to come, this ought to be a intense night. From the VH1 article:

De la Rocha recently called for President Bush to be “tried for being a war criminal,” and during the band’s Lolla set, he raged against the last eight years of Republican rule and even had a word of warning for “Brother Obama,” referring to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama.

“Now, we know Brother Obama. … But I tell you what, if he comes to power come November and he doesn’t start pulling troops out of Afghanistan, I know a lot of people who are gonna stand up and burn down every office of every Senate.”

Meet your meat

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Meet your meat is the movie that the meat industry does NOT want you to see. I watched this a few years back and it spurred my initial shift to vegetarianism. I wanted to post the movie again just in case anyone has not seen this film.

Life on “Old MacDonald’s Farm” isn’t what it used to be. The green pastures and idyllic barnyard scenes portrayed in children’s books have been replaced by windowless sheds, tiny crates, wire cages, and other confinement systems integral to what is now known as “factory farming.”

Today the majority of farmed animals are:

confined to the point that they can barely move,
denied veterinary care,
mutilated without painkillers,
and finally slaughtered — often while fully conscious.

Gloucester Cheese rolling festival

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

This has got to be the showcase event if we, the human race ever host a tour of our world for alien visitors. Every year in Glouchester, UK a cheese rolling festival is held in the countryside. What happens in this event you ask? From the website:

“At the top of the hill, competitors (any number from 2 to a maximum of about 20) sit in a line and wait. The Master of Ceremonies escorts an invited guest to the start line and helps him/her to sit on the precipitous slope, holding a 7-8lb. ‘Double Gloucester’ cheese.”

What happens afterwards is pure insanity!

What does the bloodied and battered first place finisher win you ask? Why the wheel of cheese they just “chased” after of course. Those who come second or third receive a small cash prize.

Good thing for free healthcare over in the UK…

I am determined to attend this event in person very soon!
